Endemism.org publishes original reference content about endemic species, native ranges, taxonomy, geographic patterns, and biodiversity data. This page explains how material published on the site may be used and how third-party data and sources are treated.
Content published by Endemism.org
Original text, page structure, data presentation, editorial descriptions, custom tables, charts, graphics, and other site-created material are protected by applicable copyright law unless a page states otherwise.
Copyright protection applies to the original expression and presentation created for Endemism.org. It does not create ownership over scientific facts, species names, public-domain information, or third-party datasets that remain subject to their own terms.
Scientific facts and original site content are not the same thing. A species distribution, taxonomic name, or published count may be factual information, while the wording, organization, chart design, or compiled presentation used on Endemism.org can still be original site material.
Permitted use
Short quotations from Endemism.org may be used for commentary, research, education, criticism, or reference where permitted by law, provided that the quoted material is limited to what is reasonably necessary and the source is identified clearly.
Links to Endemism.org pages may be shared freely. Page titles and brief factual references may also be used when identifying or discussing material published on the site.
Use that falls within statutory exceptions or limitations to copyright remains subject to the law that applies in the relevant jurisdiction.
Uses requiring permission
Permission should be obtained before reproducing substantial portions of original Endemism.org content outside uses already permitted by law.
This includes copying complete articles, reproducing large portions of original text, republishing custom graphics or infographics, duplicating site-created charts, or distributing substantial collections of site content as part of another website, publication, database, application, or commercial product.
Changing formatting, rearranging paragraphs, translating text, or making minor wording changes does not by itself turn copied material into independently created content.
Data and factual information
Endemism.org uses factual information from biological databases, government agencies, scientific publications, museums, universities, conservation authorities, and other sources. Those facts remain subject to the rights, licenses, and terms of the original providers where applicable.
Individual facts are not claimed as exclusive property merely because they appear on Endemism.org. The site’s selection, arrangement, explanation, formatting, and presentation of those facts may contain original copyrightable elements.
Anyone wishing to reuse data originating from a third-party source should check the original provider’s terms rather than assume that publication on Endemism.org changes the source license.
Third-party datasets and databases
Some biological sources impose their own attribution, licensing, database, or reuse conditions. Endemism.org does not grant permission on behalf of those providers.
A citation to an external database or publication identifies the evidence used for a claim. It does not imply that Endemism.org owns that underlying database or that the data may be redistributed without restriction.
Where a dataset is openly licensed, reuse should follow the license issued by the original provider. Where no reuse terms are stated, users should consult the source directly before reproducing substantial material.
Scientific names and taxonomy
Scientific names, taxonomic classifications, species authorships, and other biological nomenclature are used as factual identifiers. Their appearance on Endemism.org does not imply ownership of the names themselves.
Descriptions, comparisons, explanatory text, and original compilations built around those names remain subject to the rights applicable to the material in which they appear.
Images and visual material
Images published on Endemism.org may include site-created graphics, licensed material, openly licensed material, public-domain material, or other media used under applicable permission or legal exception.
An image appearing on the site should not be assumed to be freely reusable unless its licensing status clearly allows that use. Rights in third-party images remain with their respective owners.
Site-created infographics, diagrams, visual comparisons, and other original graphics should not be republished in full without permission unless the intended use is otherwise allowed by law.
Charts and visualizations
Charts created by Endemism.org may be based on factual data from external sources. The underlying values may remain attributable to those original sources, while the visual design, arrangement, labels, and presentation may be original to Endemism.org.
Users who need the underlying scientific data should consult the cited source rather than extracting a chart image and treating it as the original dataset.
Automated copying and republication
Automated access that reproduces substantial portions of the site, republishes articles at scale, mirrors site content, or builds a competing copy of the site’s published material is not permitted except where authorized by law or written permission.
Routine indexing by legitimate search engines and other normal web-discovery services is treated separately from systems designed primarily to copy or republish site content.
Attribution
Where attribution is appropriate, it should identify Endemism.org and the specific page from which the material was taken. Attribution does not replace the need for permission where the proposed use exceeds what copyright law or an applicable license allows.
Attribution should not imply endorsement, partnership, authorship, or approval by Endemism.org when no such relationship exists.
External sources and ownership
References to external organizations, databases, publications, institutions, and scientific authorities are provided to document the basis of published information. Names, trademarks, logos, and other protected material belonging to third parties remain the property of their respective owners.
Reference to a third-party source does not imply sponsorship or affiliation unless that relationship is stated explicitly.
Rights concerns and permission requests
Requests to reproduce substantial original material, questions about permitted use, or concerns about the ownership or licensing of material appearing on Endemism.org can be submitted through the site’s contact channel.
A report concerning possible unauthorized use of third-party material should identify the material in question, the page where it appears, and the basis of the claimed rights so the issue can be reviewed against the available evidence.
